The epicenter is the Feeding Our Future scandal, where 78 defendants, allegedly bilked $250 million from a federal child nutrition program during the COVID-19 pandemic by fabricating meal distributions for nonexistent children through a network of sham nonprofits. Additional indictments include a $14 million autism therapy fraud led by Asha Farhan Hassan, who recruited Somali families for kickbacks on inflated reimbursements, and an $8 million housing stabilization scam involving eight defendants, six of Somali origin, who set up fake companies to siphon Medicaid funds for unprovided services to vulnerable populations. As of December 2025, 87 people have been charged across these cases, with 61 convictions secured, prompting U.S. Treasury investigations into potential diversions to the Somali terrorist group al-Shabaab and heightened ICE operations targeting Somali immigrants in the Twin Cities amid national scrutiny.",
